Keeping Kids Safe

At Camp Wakonda, we understand it can be difficult to leave your child for any amount of time. Physical safety is the most important part of our programming and facilities.

Our site is inspected at least twice throughout the camping season by the Carroll County Health Department.  Our water system is tested monthly.  Our entire crew is certified in first aid and CPR, and we always operate with a certified nurse or first responder in our Health Center.  We operate with a model that assigns a small number of campers per counselor.

Safety at the Waterfront

Wakonda is blessed to be located on the shores of Leesville Lake, located in the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District. The Conservancy works to ensure the waterways are safe. The water is tested on a regular basis, and testing methods are consistently being updated, improved, and expanded to continue to give the public the information they need to make the best decision on swimming safety.

Swimming

Swimming on our waterfront is only allowed when a certified lifeguard is present. Life jackets are recommended for our youngest campers.
In addition to the lifeguards, we assign particular counselors to be "active eyes" to help the lifeguards spot any possible issues.
Swimmers must have a "buddy," and every 15 minutes there is a "buddy check" to make sure everyone is accounted for.

Canoeing & Kayaking

Canoeing and kayaking is a big part of our summer programming. Campers are required to wear a life jacket at all times while in the water.  A lifeguard will always accompany any canoe or kayak trips throughout the week.
Trip length will vary depending on age of campers.
