Swimming on our waterfront is not allowed without a lifeguard certified by the Red Cross. Campers aren't even allowed in the water without the lifeguard present. We start the week with swim tests to gauge the swimming ability of all of our campers, and assign them a wristband to tell where they will be allowed and whether or not they need to wear a life jacket. Swimmers are not allowed in the water without having a "buddy," and every 15 minutes in the water there is a "buddy check" to make sure all people in the water are accounted for. Along with the lifeguards, we assign certain counselors, who are not already in the water, to be "active eyes" to help the lifeguards spot any possible issues.
Canoeing & Kayaking...
Canoeing and kayaking is a big part of our summer programming. Campers are required to wear a life jacket at all times while in the water. A lifeguard will always accompany any canoe or kayak trips throughout the week. Trip length will vary depending on age of campers.
Wakonda is blessed to be located on the shores of Leesville Lake, located in the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District. The Conservancy works hard to assure the waterways are safe. The water is tested on a regular basis, and testing methods are consistently being updated, improved, and expanded to continue to give the public the information they need to make the best decision on swimming safety. Please feel free to use the link below to visit the Muskingum website.
